Domaine Boissan Gigondas 2021
Domaine de Boissan's Gigondas hails from the renowned Gigondas AOC in the Southern Rhone Valley, a region celebrated for its powerful reds. The terroir here benefits from warm, dry Mediterranean influences, with rocky soils and a dramatic mountain backdrop that imparts depth and intensity to the wines. Gigondas is often seen as a rival to Chateauneuf-du-Pape, known for producing wines of great structure and longevity.
This Gigondas is predominantly made from Grenache (80%) and Syrah (20%) grapes contributing complexity. Grenache brings rich fruit flavours and warmth, while Syrah adds spice and structure. The wine is a classic example of a Southern Rhone red, with robust tannins, generous fruit, and a strong sense of the region's sun-drenched terroir.
The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand from old vines, some over 40 years old, which ensure concentrated flavours. The wine is fermented in whole bunches (not destemmed), a traditional method that enhances the complexity and structure. The fermentation takes place in both underground tanks and barrels, adding layers of depth. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, allowing it to develop further complexity and smooth out the tannins before bottling.
The 2021 Domaine de Boissan Gigondas presents a powerful, generous nose of dark, ripe fruit, particularly prunes, with subtle earthy and smoky notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, offering rich flavours of blackberries, black cherries, and hints of spice. The finish is long and slightly savoury, with the ripe fruit balanced by a fine tannic grip.
It pairs wonderfully with dishes such as roasted red meats, lamb, and game, especially when prepared with herbs or grilled. It also complements strong cheeses like aged Comte or Manchego.
