Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy's most prestigious red wines, produced exclusively in the hilltop town of Montalcino, located in Tuscany, about 40 kilometres south of Siena. The region is known for its Mediterranean climate, with mild winters, long sunny days, and a unique combination of soils, including galestro (a flaky, schistous clay soil), sandstone, and volcanic tuff. This terroir promotes deep root growth, essential for water and nutrient retention, especially during dry years, and creates wines with exceptional complexity and ageing potential. Montalcino has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its stunning landscape and historical significance.

The wine is made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, a clone of Sangiovese uniquely suited to the region. Known for its robust tannins, vibrant acidity, and ability to age gracefully, Sangiovese Grosso produces a wine that is structured yet elegant. Brunello di Montalcino DOCG regulations ensure rigorous production standards, including a minimum ageing period of five years after harvest, contributing to its world-class reputation.

The grapes are hand-harvested at the beginning of October and undergo careful selection. After destemming and pressing, the must is fermented in steel tanks at controlled temperatures. A long maceration period of 25 days with daily pump-overs ensures maximum flavour and colour extraction. A portion of the grapes is fermented whole, an ancient technique that enhances the wine's aromatic complexity and body. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for three years in Slavonian oak casks, with some aged in tonneaux (5-hectolitre barrels) and others in larger 15–25-hectolitre barrels. This combination of barrel sizes imparts both nuanced oak influence and delicate oxygenation. The wine is then naturally cold-stabilised before bottling.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino displays an intense ruby red colour with garnet tinges. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet of berries, violet, and musk, accented by notes of spices, vanilla, and aromatic wood. Subtle hints of jam and balsamic nuances add depth. The palate is dry, warm, and well-structured, with robust tannins balanced by a harmonious acidity. The finish is persistent, with flavours of roasted hazelnuts and minerals lingering on the palate.

This wine pairs beautifully with game dishes such as wild boar or pheasant, red meats, and rich dishes featuring white truffle or mature cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C in a large glass to allow its complex aromas to develop fully.
