Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2022
The Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier is a benchmark wine from the Canberra District in New South Wales, showcasing the unique blend of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier. The region's cool climate and granite-based soils contribute to the wine's finesse and complexity, making it a celebrated example of this Rhone-inspired style.
Grapes are hand-harvested with 25% whole bunches included in the ferment. Co-fermentation with Viognier enhances the aromatic profile. The wine undergoes a three-week maceration and is matured for 12 months in French oak, 25% of which is new, sourced from renowned cooperages like Taransaud and Sirugue.
The wine offers a complex bouquet of ripe red berries, violets, roses, and layers of spice such as white pepper and cardamom. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins framing flavours of raspberry, cherry, plum, and a hint of dark chocolate. The finish is long and elegant, with superb aging potential.
This wine pairs beautifully with roast duck, grilled lamb chops, or mushroom risotto.
