Crystallum Cuvee Cinema Pinot Noir 2023
The Crystallum Cuvee Cinema Pinot Noir comes from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, one of South Africa's most prestigious wine-growing areas for cool-climate varieties. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 300 meters, on clay and shale soils, and benefits from southeast-facing slopes that receive cooling breezes from Walker Bay. These conditions promote slow ripening, leading to refined, fresh wines.
This vintage was marked by a warm start to the season, followed by cooler weather and rainfall in December, which extended the ripening period. Fermentation utilized 60% whole clusters with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by 11 months of aging in old 228-liter French oak barrels, which preserved the fruit's freshness while adding subtle complexity.
The wine displays vibrant aromas of black cherry, brambles, and spices, with hints of aniseed. On the palate, elegant tension is accompanied by plush flavours of wild strawberries, pomegranate, and a savoury note of tomato leaf. A saline finish and phenolic grip contribute to its structured elegance.
Ideal with duck breast, wild mushroom risotto, or herb-crusted lamb chops. The wine's fresh and savoury profile also complements dishes with tomato-based sauces or soft, creamy cheeses.
