Crystallum The Agnes 2023
The Crystallum The Agnes Chardonnay is a premium white wine crafted from multiple vineyards across the Hemel-en-Aarde and Overberg regions in South Africa. These vineyards are planted on diverse soils, including clay, shale, sandstone, and quartz, which contribute unique characteristics to the final blend.
The 2023 vintage began with a warm and dry season, leading to early bud break. Cooler, wetter conditions in December extended ripening, resulting in focused wines with slightly riper profiles. The grapes were pressed whole, with the juice naturally fermented in 228- and 500-liter French oak barrels (10% new) and aged on lees for 10 months to enhance texture and depth.
This Chardonnay exhibits aromas of pineapple, lemon peel, and light butterscotch, with subtle hints of oatmeal. On the palate, vibrant notes of lime, quince, and pear lead to a refreshing, saline finish, underpinned by lively acidity and a smooth, textured mouthfeel.
Pair this wine with dishes like grilled salmon, butter-poached lobster, or lemon-roasted chicken. It also complements creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
