Chateau Gigognan Esprit De Gigognan Chateauneuf Du Pape 2019
This wine is produced in the renowned Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, located in the southern Rhone Valley of France. Known for its unique terroir featuring a mix of galets roulés (large rounded stones), sand, and clay, the region is celebrated for crafting robust and expressive wines. The warm Mediterranean climate, combined with cooling mistral winds, ensures optimal ripening of grapes, contributing to wines with complexity, power, and elegance.
The 2019 Esprit de Gigognan is a classic Southern Rhone blend, comprising of Grenache and Syrah grapes. This combination highlights the strength of Grenache's ripe fruit flavours, and Syrah's structure and spice. The style is full-bodied, rich, and intense.
The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure quality, followed by careful sorting. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled vats to preserve the vibrant fruit characteristics. Aging takes place in a mix of French oak barrels and vats, balancing the wine's ripe fruit profile with subtle oak complexity. This careful vinification process allows the wine to express both its terroir and varietal purity.
The wine exhibits a deep ruby-red colour and a nose bursting with aromas of ripe red fruits like cherry and raspberry, layered with notes of black pepper, liquorice, and a hint of leather. On the palate, it is powerful yet elegant, with velvety tannins and a balanced structure. The finish is long and nuanced, showcasing earthy and spicy undertones.
This Chateauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled pork, and hearty stews. It also complements game dishes and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C.
