Chateau de Ferrand is a distinguished Grand Cru Classé estate located in the Saint-Emilion appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank. Saint-Emilion is renowned for its Merlot-dominant blends, producing wines celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and ageing potential. The region's diverse terroir, characterised by limestone and clay soils, contributes significantly to the distinctive profiles of its wines.
The 2016 vintage is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This blend reflects the classic Saint-Emilion style, with Merlot providing roundness and ripe fruit flavours, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon add structure, complexity, and aromatic finesse.
The growing season began with a mild, wet winter, leading to an early budburst in late March. Flowering occurred under favourable conditions in early June. A warm, dry summer induced water stress, beneficial for grape concentration. Veraison was noted in early August, with grapes ripening slowly and evenly. Harvesting took place between 4th and 19th October, yielding grapes in excellent health with an ideal balance of sugar and acidity. Post-harvest, the wine underwent fermentation and was aged in oak barrels, enhancing its complexity and ageing potential.
The wine presents a deep garnet hue. The nose is intense, offering aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is well-balanced, featuring juicy red and black fruits complemented by hints of cacao and a touch of minerality. The tannins are smooth yet present with a lingering, elegant finish.
This red wine pairs well with red meats such as beef and venison. It also complements roasted lamb and game birds. For a vegetarian option, consider pairing it with a hearty mushroom risotto or a lentil stew.
