Domaine George Lignier Et Fils Gevrey Chambertin 2021
This wine comes from the Gevrey-Chambertin AOC, one of the most prestigious appellations in Burgundy's Cote de Nuits. Known for its robust and age-worthy Pinot Noir, Gevrey-Chambertin features soils rich in clay and limestone, which contribute to the complexity and structure of the wines. The appellation is celebrated for its balance of power and finesse, with wines often showcasing savoury and earthy characteristics alongside vibrant fruit.
Crafted from Pinot Noir, the hallmark grape of Burgundy, this wine represents a traditional village-level Gevrey-Chambertin. It reflects the appellation's classic style, blending broad, savoury fruit with lifted tannins and freshness, making it both approachable and elegant. The grapes for this wine are from 50-year-old vines spread across four parcels in the appellation: En Vosne, En Deree, Es Murots, and Le Forneau. About 30% of the grapes are vinified with their stems, enhancing aromatic complexity and structure. The wine is aged for 18 months in 228-litre old oak barrels, to maintain a subtle oak influence without overpowering the fruit.
The 2021 vintage opens with aromas of red currant, raspberry, and a hint of woodsmoke. On the palate, it offers vibrant flavours of tart red berries, complemented by fine-grained tannins and a bright, fresh acidity. The wine is elegant and structured, with a persistent finish showcasing subtle earthy and spicy nuances.
This Gevrey-Chambertin pairs beautifully with roasted or braised meats such as beef, veal, or game like venison. It is also an excellent choice for poultry dishes, especially duck or goose. The wine's savoury and earthy profile complements mushroom-based dishes or hard cheeses.
