Clos du Roi Rouge is produced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the most prestigious appellations in the Rhône Valley, France. The region is known for its diverse soils and warm Mediterranean climate, which provide ideal conditions for growing powerful and refined red wines. The vineyards are located on lower and mid-level terraces, with clay-limestone soils covered in large, heat-retaining pebbles (galets roulés). These stones help regulate vine temperature and promote deep root growth, contributing to the wine's exceptional complexity. The Mistral wind, which blows throughout the year, helps keep the vines healthy by reducing humidity and disease risk.
This wine is a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend, composed of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes. Grenache provides richness and ripe fruit flavours, Syrah adds spice and structure, while Mourvèdre contributes depth and complexity. The result is a full-bodied, elegant wine with a balance of fruit, earthiness, and refined tannins, suitable for both early enjoyment and long-term ageing.
The grapes are hand-harvested with careful selection in both the vineyard and winery. Fermentation occurs in concrete tulip-shaped vats with gentle extraction through light pump-overs and punch-downs. Around 10–15% whole clusters are included in certain vats to enhance complexity. After fermentation, the wine undergoes a warm post-ferment maceration for up to two weeks. The final blend is aged for 12 months in oak barrels (20%) and large wooden foudres (30%), followed by six months in concrete tanks, which helps to refine its texture while preserving freshness.
Clos du Roi Rouge displays a vibrant cherry-red hue. The nose is expressive and inviting, dominated by ripe red fruits such as raspberry and cherry, with subtle hints of spice and garrigue (wild Mediterranean herbs). The palate is rich and progressive, unfolding layers of fruit and silky tannins without heaviness. The oak ageing adds complexity, with delicate notes of vanilla and toasted spice enhancing the wine's balance. The finish is bright, elegant, and lingering.
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast or grilled red meats, game dishes, and aged cheeses. It is particularly well-suited to hare à la royale, a classic French game dish. Other excellent pairings include rack of lamb with rosemary, duck confit, venison stew, and truffle-infused dishes. Serve at 18°C, and consider decanting for an hour before serving to fully reveal its complexity.
