Grosset Polish Hill 2023
The Polish Hill Vineyard is located in the Clare Valley, South Australia, renowned for producing some of the finest Rieslings in the world. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 460 metres, in the region's coolest area, which allows for long, slow ripening. This is key for maintaining the vibrant acidity and aromatic intensity that Clare Valley Rieslings are famous for. The vineyard's unique terroir, characterised by low fertility soils of silt, shallow shales, and a thin crust of clay and gravel, means the vines struggle to grow, leading to small, concentrated berries that contribute to the wine's complexity and structure.
Made from Riesling grapes, Grosset Polish Hill 2023 is a powerful expression of the Clare Valley's cool climate. This Riesling is characterised by its taut, mineral structure, with layers of crisp citrus and floral notes. The wine has a lean and defined style, with a signature minerality and a bright lime-driven finish. Its fresh, youthful profile promises good ageing potential, with complexity expected to develop over time.
The grapes for this wine are hand-harvested and delivered promptly to the winery to preserve freshness. After being crushed and de-stemmed, the fruit is gently pressed in a pneumatic press. The juice is then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using neutral yeasts to maintain the natural expression of the vineyard. Fermentation lasts about two weeks and occurs in separate batches based on clone and vine age. After fermentation, the wine is blended and bottled. The wine's fermentation process ensures the preservation of its fresh fruit characteristics, and it is bottled with minimal intervention to maintain the purity of the Riesling grape.
The 2023 vintage has a golden colour, and on the nose, it opens with inviting aromas of lime juice, beeswax, and delicate floral notes. On the palate, the wine is lean and structured, with a clear minerality that gives the wine a crisp, fresh finish. Flavours of lime and hints of citrus zest linger, providing balance and a clean, vibrant finish. The wine is refreshingly complex, with the potential to evolve beautifully over time, given its structure and acidity.
This Riesling pairs wonderfully with seafood dishes, particularly grilled fish, oysters, or shrimp. It also complements Asian cuisine, such as spicy Thai dishes or sushi. For a heartier option, it pairs well with grilled chicken or goat cheese. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C.
