The Henry's Seven 2022 blend originates from South Australia's renowned Barossa Valley and Eden Valley regions. The Barossa is globally recognised for its rich, bold wines, particularly Shiraz, while the higher-altitude Eden Valley brings a cooler climate influence, contributing elegance and aromatic complexity. This blend pays homage to Henry Evans, who planted the first vineyard at Keyneton in 1853, reflecting the pioneering spirit and multicultural heritage of the Barossa wine region, which introduced southern French and Spanish grape varieties to South Australia.
The blend is comprised of 72% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 11% Mataro (Mourvedre), and 2% Viognier. Shiraz forms the backbone, delivering structure, richness, and dark fruit character. Grenache adds bright red fruit and spice, Mataro contributes depth and savoury complexity, while Viognier, co-fermented with Shiraz, enhances aromatic lift and texture. The style is medium to full-bodied with a harmonious balance of fruit, spice, and savoury notes.
The fruit was hand-picked between late March and early May 2022. The Shiraz was co-fermented with Viognier to integrate aromatics and enhance mouthfeel, while Grenache and Mataro were vinified separately. Post-fermentation, the wine was matured for 8 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads to preserve its fresh fruit character while adding subtle oak complexity.
Deep crimson with violet hues, the wine offers an enticing nose of raspberry, plum, and boysenberry, layered with hints of sage, black pepper, and cocoa, complemented by floral nuances and a touch of vanilla. The palate is rich and supple, with flavours of dark plum, cherry, and crushed blackberry balanced by vibrant acidity. Fine, savoury tannins provide structure, leading to a long, harmonious finish.
This wine pairs well with char-grilled lamb chops, beef ragu, or roast duck. It also complements Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille or spiced lamb koftas. Serve at 16–18°C.
