Justino's Madeira Colheita Tinta Negra originates from the island of Madeira, Portugal, renowned for its unique fortified wines. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Câmara de Lobos, and São Vicente. These vineyards, planted on steep, terraced slopes called "poios" are characteristic of Madeira's challenging yet rewarding viticultural landscape. The volcanic soils, varying in composition with altitude, contribute to the wine's distinct mineral profile.
This Colheita Madeira is made from 100% Tinta Negra, a versatile and widely planted grape on the island. The wine is fortified, medium-sweet (106g/L residual sugar), and aged to reflect the traditional Madeira style, balancing richness with vibrant acidity and a complex flavour profile.
The grapes were destemmed and crushed, followed by fermentation with skin contact at controlled temperatures. Frequent pump-overs during the initial 2–3 days ensured optimal extraction of colour and aromas. Fermentation was halted with the addition of neutral grape spirit, preserving the desired sweetness. The wine was aged using the traditional "canteiro" method in a mix of French and American oak barrels, allowing it to develop its complexity over time.
This Madeira presents a brilliant medium-deep amber colour. On the nose, it is elegant and complex, offering aromas of molasses, honey cake, caramel, walnuts, and warm honey. The palate is rich and full-flavoured, showcasing pronounced caramel and dried fruit notes, supported by a lively acidity that balances the wine's sweetness. The finish is long and layered, with lingering nutty and toffee nuances.
It pairs beautifully with a variety of desserts, including sticky toffee pudding, walnut tart, or crème brûlée. It also complements aged cheeses and roasted nuts. For a classic pairing, serve it alongside Christmas cake or mince pies.
