Krug Grande Cuvee hails from the Champagne region in northern France, a prestigious area known for its chalky soils and cool climate that are ideal for crafting world-renowned sparkling wines. Maison Krug, founded in 1843, is celebrated for its meticulous blending and commitment to expressing Champagne's full potential beyond vintage constraints.
This multi-vintage cuvee is composed of 44% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, and 20% Meunier. The house style prioritises richness, depth, and complexity, offering a uniquely opulent and layered expression with each edition. As Krug's flagship non-vintage cuvee, it aims to embody the fullest and most generous representation of Champagne each year.
The 172eme Edition is built around the 2016 harvest and includes a blend of 146 wines from 11 different years, dating back to 1998. Reserve wines constitute 42% of the final blend, drawn from Krug's extensive library to enhance complexity and texture. Over 20 years of craftsmanship go into the final result, including extended maturation on the lees in the bottle to develop finesse and character.
This Champagne shows a light golden hue with fine, energetic bubbles. The nose reveals a bouquet of floral notes, ripe and dried fruits, citrus zest, marzipan, and hints of gingerbread. On the palate, flavours unfold in layers—hazelnuts, nougat, barley sugar, jellied citrus, toasted almonds, brioche, and honey—delivering richness, vibrancy, and a persistent finish.
It pairs elegantly with aged hard cheeses like parmesan or comté, cured meats such as Jabugo ham, and seafood including oysters and grilled prawns. Its depth also complements richly flavoured dishes like turbot with truffle, as well as spiced cuisines such as Indian or Moroccan. For dessert, try it with carrot cake, tarte Tatin, or cheesecake.
