Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac 2019
Monbazillac is located in the Bergerac wine region of southwest France, known for its sweet, botrytised wines. The vineyards, primarily planted on clay-limestone soils, benefit from the humid climate near the Dordogne River, which encourages the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This natural phenomenon concentrates the sugars in the grapes, resulting in richly sweet wines with remarkable complexity. Monbazillac is often compared to Sauternes but offers an equally high-quality experience at a more accessible price.
This wine is a blend of Semillon and Muscadelle grapes, the traditional varieties of the region. It is a sweet, full-bodied dessert wine (liquoreux), with a lush texture and complex layers of flavour, showcasing the influence of noble rot. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in multiple passes through the vineyard to select only the botrytised berries. After pressing, the juice undergoes slow fermentation at controlled temperatures to preserve its aromatic integrity. Aging occurs in oak barrels, enhancing the wine's depth and imparting a subtle vanilla and spice character. This process results in a wine with exceptional balance between sweetness and acidity.
The 2019 Domaine L'Ancienne Cure Monbazillac has a bright golden hue. On the nose, it reveals intense aromas of dried apricot, candied orange peel, honey, and a touch of vanilla. The palate is rich and velvety, with flavours of ripe tropical fruits, marmalade, and toasted almonds. A refreshing acidity ensures balance and a long, luxurious finish.
It pairs beautifully with blue cheeses like Roquefort, creamy desserts such as creme brulee, or fruit-based pastries.
