Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana 2018

Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana originates from Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmont, Italy, a region synonymous with world-class Nebbiolo wines. The vineyard is situated on the western slope of Serralunga, surrounded by renowned crus such as Lazzarito, Rionda, and Francia. Its altitude, ranging from 250 to 350 metres above sea level, combined with south to south-west facing slopes, creates an ideal microclimate for producing structured and elegant Barolos.

This wine is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, a grape known for its aromatic complexity, firm tannins, and exceptional ageing potential. The 2018 vintage highlights Nebbiolo's red fruit and floral characteristics, complemented by fine tannins and a balanced structure.

The Nebbiolo grapes were hand-harvested at the end of October 2018 after a long and gradual ripening season. Fermentation occurred in open-top wooden vats over 20 to 30 days, followed by a submerged cap maceration for 53 days to enhance extraction. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation unfolded before the wine was aged for 30 months in 25-hectolitre custom-made Slavonian oak casks. Bottling took place in July 2021, after which the wine rested further to ensure its balance and integration.

Deep ruby in colour, the 2018 Barolo Baudana offers intense aromas of dark cherries, raspberries, and white pepper, intertwined with mint, cedar, and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is beautifully textured, with balsamic nuances and hints of liquorice that add depth. The fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity create a harmonious balance, leading to a long, juicy, and elegant finish.

This red wine pairs excellently with braised beef, wild game, and mushroom risotto, as well as truffle-infused pasta. It also makes an ideal match for aged cheeses and roasted lamb. Decant for an hour and serve at 18°C.
