Domaine Madeloc Robert Pages Banyuls
This wine comes from the Banyuls AOC, situated in the Roussillon region of southern France. The vineyards are located on steep terraces overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, benefiting from a warm, dry climate. The soils, predominantly schist, force the vines to dig deep for nutrients, enhancing the wine's complexity and minerality. Banyuls is renowned for its fortified sweet wines, historically crafted to pair with the region's cuisine and known for their long aging potential.
The wine is a blend of Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Carignan grapes, with the Grenache Noir dominating. This traditional Banyuls style is characterised by its richness, complexity, and sweetness. The result is an elegant fortified red wine with oxidative notes and a full-bodied profile. The grapes are hand-harvested at full maturity, with sorting in the vineyard to ensure quality. The winemaking involves a pre-fermentation cold maceration and fermentation at 25°C. Mutage (fortification) is performed on the juice to preserve the natural sugars. The wine is aged in a combination of 30-hectolitre foudres (large oak vats) for five years and glass demijohns exposed to sunlight for one year, promoting oxidative development and enhancing complexity.
The Robert Pages Banyuls presents a deep ruby colour with garnet highlights. Aromas of prunes, raisins, and toasted cashews dominate, accompanied by hints of coffee, vanilla pods, and clove. On the palate, it is luscious and velvety, with flavours of dried fruits, warm spices, and a touch of cocoa, culminating in a long, balanced finish.
This Banyuls pairs beautifully with desserts such as praline chocolate, dried fruit tarts, or creme brulee. It also complements aged cheeses like Comte or Roquefort.
