Messias 40 Year Old White Port hails from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, a region renowned for its fortified wines. The Douro's steep terraced vineyards and schist soils provide an ideal environment for cultivating indigenous grape varieties. The region's hot summers and cold winters, combined with its unique terroir, contribute to the complexity and richness of its Ports.
This exceptional White Port is crafted from traditional Portuguese white grape varieties, including Malvasia Fina, Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, and Viosinho. Over four decades of aging, the wine develops a light amber hue with mahogany highlights. The extended maturation imparts a silky texture and extraordinary depth, resulting in a rich and indulgent profile.
The winemaking process begins with pelicular maceration, followed by fermentation at controlled temperatures. Fermentation is halted by the addition of brandy, fortifying the wine. The Port is then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of forty years in Messias' cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, allowing it to develop its complex character.
On the nose, this Port offers a beautifully layered complexity, showcasing rich aromas of caramelized nuts and apricot, intertwined with subtle notes of vanilla bean and aged honey. The palate delivers an indulgent experience, highlighted by flavours of decadent butterscotch and toasted almonds. The wine's age is evident in its silky texture and extraordinary depth, while a vibrant acidity provides balance and freshness.
This distinguished White Port pairs exceptionally well with desserts, particularly those featuring dark chocolate or mature cheeses. It can also be savoured on its own at the end of a meal. Serve chilled at 9-14°C.
