The Mullineux Granite Syrah 2020 is sourced from the Swartland region of South Africa, a recognised hotspot for exceptional Syrah production. The grapes come from a single parcel of dry-farmed bush vines located on the decomposed granite soils of the Paardeberg. These soils, rich in minerals with a layer of clay beneath, provide excellent drainage and support the vines through the region's arid conditions. The dense canopy of the vines protects the grapes from excessive sun exposure, allowing the fruit to develop aromatic complexity and freshness, characteristic of high-quality Swartland Syrah.
Made from 100% Syrah, the Granite Syrah is an elegant expression of this variety, focusing on freshness, perfume, and refinement. The wine showcases a balance of vibrant fruit, minerality, and complex aromas. Swartland Syrah, particularly from the granite soils, is known for its bright acidity, aromatic lift, and a refined, mineral-driven character. The 2020 vintage highlights these features while offering a slightly more restrained profile compared to more intense years, with a graceful and structured style.
The grapes were hand-picked during the cool early morning to preserve freshness, and whole bunches were placed in open-top 500L French oak barrels where they were foot-crushed. Indigenous fermentation was allowed to start naturally, and hand-punch-downs were carried out to ensure gentle extraction of tannins. After four weeks of skin contact, the wine was pressed and transferred back to the barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine spent 12 months in French oak barrels (50% new) followed by 10 months in a 2,000-litre foudre. It was then aged for a further nine months in bottle before release.
The Mullineux Granite Syrah 2020 is characterised by its aromatic complexity and elegance. The wine offers vivid notes of violet, cranberry, pepper spice, and wild herbs on the nose. The palate is tightly structured, with chalky tannins and a gentle integration of oak. The wine finishes long and complex, with bright acidity and a distinctive granitic edge that gives it a clean, mineral finish. The overall profile is fresh, refined, and poised, showcasing the unique terroir of the Paardeberg.
Try it with roasted lamb, venison, or grilled steaks. Its peppery spice and herbal notes also make it a great match for dishes like chargrilled vegetables, ratatouille, or roast duck with herb-infused sauces. The wine's acidity and structure complement strong cheeses such as aged Manchego or Gruyère.
