Crafted in Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region, Pol Roger's prestige cuvée pays tribute to Sir Winston Churchill, one of the House's most iconic admirers. This wine is made exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards that were already established during Churchill's lifetime, highlighting both heritage and exceptional terroir, notably from regions renowned for powerful Pinot Noir and elegant Chardonnay.
While the exact proportions remain a family secret, Pinot Noir predominates in this blend, contributing power, depth, and structure. Chardonnay brings elegance, finesse, and a subtle complexity. The result is a full-bodied, richly textured Champagne with the maturity and gravitas fitting of its namesake.
The base wines undergo two stages of settling before fermentation at low temperatures in stainless steel, keeping village and variety separate. Full malolactic fermentation is followed by bottling for secondary fermentation in Pol Roger's deepest cellars, 33 metres underground. The long lees ageing and hand riddling contribute to its hallmark fine mousse and complexity. The 2015 vintage was aged for several years before release, in keeping with Churchill's preference for aged wines.
Mid-gold in colour with an elegant stream of bubbles, the wine opens with a spicy, peppery nose that transitions into concentrated aromas of black fruit, dried fruit, hazelnut, and exotic touches. The palate is rich and broad, revealing layers of candied citrus, pastry, brioche, and cocoa. The texture is generous and rounded, with Pinot Noir's weight balanced by fresh acidity and emerging smoky complexity. A long, structured finish confirms its pedigree and ageing potential.
Best paired with refined dishes such as roast guinea fowl, wild mushroom risotto, lobster in butter sauce, or aged Comté cheese. Its robust character also stands up well to dishes with earthy or truffle accents.
