Rafael Palacios As Sortes 2022

As Sortes is crafted in the Valdeorras appellation of Galicia, Spain, specifically in the steep, terraced Bibei Valley. This region is characterised by its granite-rich soils and cooler Atlantic-influenced climate, ideal for cultivating Godello. Rafael Palacios, a pioneer in reviving this indigenous variety, has focused on sustainable viticulture, preserving old vines planted in the 1970s and 1980s. The "sortes" small vineyard parcels, are a traditional feature of this region and lend the wine its unique geo-climatic character.

The wine is made entirely from Godello, a grape known for its richness and ability to express terroir. It combines elegance and complexity, showcasing bright acidity, mineral intensity, and the potential for graceful aging.

The grapes were hand-harvested and underwent fermentation with indigenous yeasts in 500-litre French oak barrels, followed by aging on lees in the same barrels for 8 months. This meticulous process enhances the wine's textural depth and aromatic complexity while retaining its vibrant freshness.

This wine presents aromas of grapefruit, red apple, chestnut blossom, and herbal notes of boxwood, with a subtle hint of minerality. On the palate, it opens with a refreshing acidity and a lean, angular structure, evolving into a warm, creamy finish. The granite soils impart a distinctive mineral backbone, and the wine's complexity unfolds further with age.

It pairs beautifully with grilled seafood such as octopus or prawns, as well as creamy dishes like risottos or chicken with herbs.
