This Zinfandel is sourced from Sonoma County, specifically from exceptional old-vine vineyards in regions like Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The old vines, averaging 75 years of age, contribute to the wine's complexity and intensity, producing fruit with concentrated flavours that only old vines can yield. Sonoma's diverse terroirs, coupled with its Mediterranean climate, result in a wine that balances bold fruit and spice with a distinctive structure.
The wine is composed of 88% Zinfandel, with small percentages of Petite Sirah (11%) and Alicante Bouschet (1%). The Old Vine Zinfandel is a bold, full-bodied wine known for its spicy, briary fruit profile, which is complemented by dark fruit flavours and a rich mouthfeel. The aging process enhances its depth, contributing to the velvety tannins and balanced structure.
The grapes are hand-harvested and gently crushed before fermentation in small open-top stainless steel tanks. Pneumatic punch-downs and gentle aeration facilitate optimal extraction of colour and flavours. After 8–12 days of maceration, the free-run wine is drained to barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for 15 months in a combination of new and neutral French and American oak.
The Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel 2021 displays bold aromatics of black plum, dried fig, and baking spices, with hints of blackberry and liquorice. On the palate, the wine opens with a rich, luscious entry reminiscent of chocolate cherry cordial, progressing into a juicy, supple midpalate. The finish is rich and velvety, with finely textured tannins and a long, complex aftertaste.
This wine pairs beautifully with Beef Braciole, mushroom sugo, and cherry balsamic pork tenderloin. It is also ideal with other hearty meats or rich, savoury dishes.
