Spice Route Pinotage 2022

Spice Route Pinotage is produced in the Swartland region of South Africa, which is known for its diverse terroirs and hot, dry climate. The region's varied soils and cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean contribute to the unique character of wines from this area. Swartland is one of South Africa's most exciting wine regions, and Spice Route is one of its standout producers.

This wine is made from 100% Pinotage, South Africa's signature grape, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. The Pinotage grape produces wines with bold fruit flavours and a unique smoky, earthy character. The 2022 vintage of Spice Route Pinotage is a full-bodied red with a rich, intense profile, combining dark fruit and spicy elements.

The grapes are harvested by hand from the Malmesbury vineyard, where unirrigated bush vines are planted in Koffieklip soils. After manual sorting, the grapes undergo fermentation in open concrete fermenters, with manual punch-downs twice a day to extract maximum colour and flavour. The wine is aged for 10 months in a combination of 30% new American oak and neutral French and American oak, with a small portion also maturing in qvevri (traditional clay pots). This mix of fermentation and aging techniques adds complexity and depth to the wine.

The 2022 Spice Route Pinotage showcases a deep ruby red colour. On the nose, it is rich with black plum, cherries, and dark spices, along with hints of cedar. On the palate, it offers fresh, dark fruit flavours complemented by smooth tannins and a lingering spice. The wine is bold and expressive, with a full-bodied structure and a harmonious finish.

This wine pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes, such as Indian curry or barbecue, and well-aged steaks. It is also a great match for charcuterie and game meats like venison or roasted duck.
