Tablas Creek Mourvèdre 2018 originates from the Adelaida District in Paso Robles, California. This region, known for its Rhône-style wines, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich soils, perfect for cultivating Mourvèdre.
This wine is a 100% Mourvèdre varietal, showcasing the grape's capability to stand alone as a single-varietal wine. Typically used as a blending grape, Mourvèdre here takes center stage, offering a robust and earthy profile with elegant depth. The wine is medium to full-bodied, balancing structure and vibrant acidity.
The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented using native yeasts in large wooden tanks. After about three weeks of maceration, the wine was pressed and aged in 1,200-gallon foudres for a year. It was then bottled in May 2020, producing a well-integrated wine with the potential for aging over the next 15 years.
This Mourvèdre offers a spicy, brambly nose with aromas of boysenberry, plum, liquorice, and hints of leather. The palate features flavours of red currant, earthy loam, and meaty drippings. The finish is long and refined, with notes of sweet spices and dusty tannins, promising further complexity with age.
This wine pairs beautifully with rich stews, pork chops with fruit reduction, or Asian-inspired beef stir-fry. It also complements bittersweet chocolate desserts.
