Valdipiatta's Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Vigna d'Alfiero hails from Montepulciano, Tuscany, a region renowned for producing distinguished Sangiovese-based wines. The Vigna d'Alfiero vineyard, established in the late 1960s by Alfiero Carpini, contributes to the wine's unique character.
This wine is a pure expression of Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. It embodies the richness, elegance, and finesse typical of the varietal, enhanced by the distinctive terroir of the vineyard.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with maceration on the skins for 20–25 days. Techniques such as daily pump-overs and délestage are employed to enhance extraction. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation follows in temperature-controlled steel tanks. The wine matures for 15–18 months in French oak tonneaux (500 L) and/or Slavonian oak barrels (30 hL), followed by an additional 6–12 months of bottle ageing.
The wine presents a deep ruby red hue. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of cherry, violet, and ripe black berry fruit, interwoven with spicy notes of vanilla and black pepper, attributed to its oak ageing. The palate is full-bodied and well-balanced, featuring smooth, firm tannins and fresh acidity. Flavours of cooked plum, fig, dark chocolate, and liquorice contribute to its complexity, leading to a long, silky, and elegant finish.
This wine pairs excellently with pasta with wild game, mushroom, or truffle sauces, grilled or stewed red meats, roasted or stewed game, and mature cheeses. Serving temperature 18 °C.
