Zorah Chilar 2021
Zorah Chilar 2021 is produced in the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia, known for its ancient winemaking traditions and high-altitude vineyards. Situated at 1,400–1,500 metres above sea level, the terroir benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation, ideal for producing balanced wines. The soils are low-vigour, sub-alkaline, and rich in limestone and large stones, with a top layer of sand. This phylloxera-free region enables vines to grow on their own roots, preserving their natural characteristics.
This wine is crafted entirely from Chilar, an ancient and rare Armenian grape variety almost lost to time. Chilar produces elongated, cylindrical clusters of oval-shaped berries with a greenish-yellow hue. The variety is celebrated for its ability to withstand disease and temperature extremes, yielding wines with distinctive freshness and textural complexity.
The Chilar grapes are handpicked from scattered rows in older vineyards near the Zorah estate. The wine is fermented and aged in traditional Armenian clay amphorae, known as Karasi, with around 60 days of skin contact to enhance structure and depth. After fermentation, it is aged in amphorae for nine months, followed by 10 months in bottle. Only natural yeast is used, and the wine undergoes mild filtration before bottling.
Zorah Chilar 2021 is a beautifully balanced, textural white wine with an orange hue and rounded profile. It opens with flavours of pear and white peach, accompanied by a subtly grainy structure. The finish is pure and linear, featuring bright citrus notes that linger elegantly.
This wine pairs well with grilled seafood, roasted poultry, or herb-infused Mediterranean dishes. It also complements fresh salads, soft cheeses, and lightly spiced vegetable dishes.
