Zorah Yeraz 2017

Zorah Yeraz originates from Vayots Dzor, Armenia, a region steeped in ancient winemaking tradition. The vineyards are situated at an extreme altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level, among some of the highest in the world. This terroir benefits from a phylloxera-free environment and a unique combination of volcanic, sedimentary, and limestone soils. These ultra-centennial bush vines, grown without irrigation, produce a natural field blend of ancient strains within the Areni variety, showcasing Armenia's deep-rooted viticultural heritage.

Zorah Yeraz is a natural field blend of Areni, incorporating diverse strains that have survived and evolved over centuries. This approach creates a wine with layered complexity and balance, reminiscent of cru Burgundy or top-quality Sangiovese, yet distinctly Armenian in character.

The wine undergoes fermentation in rough concrete tanks with temperature control, using only natural yeast to reflect the purity of its origins. Aging is conducted in traditional Armenian amphorae of varying sizes for nearly 24 months, with additional refinement in large, untoasted casks to soften the tannins. The wine is further aged for 12 months in bottle, allowing its elegant structure to harmonise.

Yeraz 2017 reveals a lovely ethereal nose, offering aromas of spice and crushed raspberries. On the palate, it is fine and elegant, with lingering pure flavours and earthy notes. The wine finishes with distinctive notes of spice, showcasing its unique terroir.

This wine pairs beautifully with roast duck, grilled lamb chops, or wild game. It also complements pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces, mature cheeses, and herb-infused Mediterranean fare. For a lighter pairing, consider mushroom risotto or roasted vegetables.
