Castello di Verrazzano's Chianti Classico Gran Selezione hails from Greve in Chianti, situated within Tuscany's renowned Chianti Classico region. This area is celebrated for its rolling hills and limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the production of high-quality Sangiovese wines. The 'Gran Selezione' designation represents the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid, indicating wines sourced from the estate's best vineyards and subjected to stringent production standards.
This wine is composed entirely of Sangiovese grapes harvested from the Querciolina vineyard. The 'Gran Selezione' classification ensures a wine of superior quality, showcasing the depth and elegance characteristic of top-tier Chianti Classico wines.
The grapes are hand-harvested between October 5th and 8th, with an average yield of 50 quintals per hectare. Fermentation occurs in small 50-hectolitre vessels at controlled temperatures, not exceeding 30°C, with maceration lasting 16 to 18 days. The wine undergoes ageing in wooden vessels for 18 months, followed by 12 months in small barrels (tonneaux and barriques made of 75% Allier and 25% Vosges oak), and a minimum of 6 months refining in the bottle.
The 2018 vintage exhibits a deep ruby red hue with garnet reflections. The bouquet is fine, intense, and persistent, offering a medley of fruity notes such as cherries, blackberries, and raspberries, complemented by subtle hints of oak and vanilla. On the palate, it is elegant and complex, featuring well-integrated, smooth tannins intertwined with flavours of fruit, spice, oak, and vanilla, culminating in a lengthy and pleasant finish.
This red wine pairs excellently with roasted meats, game dishes, and mature cheeses. For an optimal experience, serve at a temperature of 18-20°C.
